The City of Port Colborne is moving forward with several projects to enhance the West Street area and improve infrastructure. See below for details:
West Street Island Enhancements
Purpose: Removal of the berm and armor stone in preparation for new pergolas.
Key Updates:
- Public Feedback: Public Works is incorporating comments from the BIA into updated renderings. Open public consultation will follow, with completion targeted for the end of January 2025.
- Tree and Stone Relocation: Scheduled for January 13–17, 2025. Notices have been delivered to those directly affected.
- Heavy equipment will block all angled parking on West Street for the week.
- Sidewalks on the east side of West Street in the area will be closed.
- Efforts will be made to keep the roadway open where possible.
- Timeline:
- Final rendering to Council: Early 2025.
- Project tendering follows Council approval.
- Pergola installation targeted for May 2025 (dependent on Hydro project timeline).
- Concrete work around the pergola to align with West Street reinstatement (following Hydro line removal).
Clarence Street Storm Sewer
Purpose: Installation of a new storm sewer system.
Key Updates:
- Construction starts in the second half of January 2025, with a full road closure for 3–4 weeks.
- Businesses have been notified; a follow-up notice with exact start dates will be delivered in January.
- Once the full closure ends, partial closures will be implemented for surface works. The timeline will depend on winter conditions.
- Full completion expected by end of May 2025 at the latest.
West Street Hydro Project
Purpose: Removal of overhead hydro lines and installation of underground infrastructure.
Key Updates:
- Current Progress:
- Construction to be awarded in January 2025, with work beginning immediately thereafter.
- Traffic Disruptions:
- The east-side parking will experience the majority of disruptions due to underground work.
- Timeline:
- All work to expected to be completed by June 2025.
