Residential Rodent Control Rebate Program       

Residential property owners in Port Colborne may be eligible for a rebate (once per calendar year) for hiring the services of an Ontario licensed pest control exterminator to assist with eliminating rodent issues for the exterior of your property only.

The eligible rebate is 50% of the total bill up to a maximum amount of $200 for rodent pest control services to the exterior property only. The rebate will not cover cost of residents purchasing pest control products from hardware stores or attempting to complete the work themselves. 

See below our step-by-step process to participate in the rebate program:

 Step 1: Inspection
  • Call By-law Services at 905-835-2900 x200 or email bylawenforcement@portcolborne.ca to arrange your site inspection or if you have further questions about the program
    Note: Prior to booking an inspection, ensure the yard is free and clear of all refuse, tall grass/weeds, food and water sources, etc.
  • A Municipal Law Enforcement Officer will attend the property and inspect the exterior yard for evidence of infestation.
  • The Officer will provide the following:
    1. Information and tips on how to prevent and control rodents.
    2. A Residential Rodent Control Rebate Form and Contractor Form.
  • Any concerns with the property can be discussed directly with the Officer to rectify the deficiencies. 
 Step 2: Hire a Contractor and Complete Application
  • Hire an Ontario licensed pest control company. Speak to your Contractor before the bill is prepared to ensure it contains all the necessary information. This must include the service address, date of completion and notes of what service was completed to the exterior yard only
    Note: Pest control services provided to the interior of the home are not eligible for the rebate.
  • Make a copy of the invoice to retain for your records and submit the original invoice with the rebate application form.
  • Provide your licensed Contractor with the Contractor Form for review and completion. Keep the original copy to submit with your rebate application form.
  • Review all instructions on the rebate application form and complete and sign.
 Step 3: Submit Forms
  • Submit the Rebate Application Form with the Contractor Form along with the original invoice online, by mail, or in-person.
  • Completed forms can be submitted to:

Step 4: Review
  • Upon submission, City staff will review your application. Please allow for a minimum of 30 days for processing.
  • If your application is approved, a cheque will be issued to the property owner at the address of service provided.
  • If you application is denied, City staff will follow up to provide further details.

Preventing a Rodent Issue

 Look for Evidence
  • Burrow holes and droppings (likely near garbage).
  • Holes or gnaw marks. 
 Eliminate Food and Water Sources
  • Secure garbage & compost (both indoor & outdoor) in plastic or metal receptacles with tight fitting lids.
  • Never place fatty or oily food waste, eggs, or milk products in the composter.
  • Remove pet food after feeding, clean waste from pet enclosures/yard.
  • Eliminate water sources such leaky faucets, bird baths and all standing water.
  • Remove bird feeders during a rodent infestation.
  • Keep your yard free from all refuse.
 Eliminate Hiding and Living Places
  • Cut all tall grass and weeds back from the home’s foundation and throughout the property.
  • Remove clutter from around the home, garage & shed.
  • Lift wood piles approximately 30 cm (12 inches) off the ground and away from the home.
 Protect Buildings
  • Repair cracks in the home’s foundation.
  • Eliminate entry points (some rodents can squeeze through cracks as small as a dime).
  • Use metal weather stripping under exterior doors.
  • Cover drain pipes, dryer, fresh air, and attic vents with fine metal screening.
