Today marks the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, when we stop to acknowledge and address the continued discrimination, bullying and violence faced by members of the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community here in our own communities, and around the world. The date of May 17 was chosen in recognition of the World Health Organization’s decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder.
This term of Council has committed itself to taking steps to ensure Niagara is as inclusive and open to diversity as possible. Starting with joining the Coalition of Inclusive Municipalities, we are holding ourselves to a higher standard as we continue to partner with members of our community to make Niagara as welcoming as possible. While there is always more to be done, I am confident that this term of council will continue to make progress in its goal to be as inclusive as possible.
I would encourage everyone to take some time to learn more and connect with the many community partners in Niagara that continue to provide advocacy, support, and resources for 2SLGBTQQIA+ individuals. Today is an opportunity for us all to recognize the experiences this community has faced, and continues to face, and resolve to take action to build a safe, inclusive and welcoming society for all.
