Red Dress Day, also known as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and Two-Spirit People, is observed on May 5th. The day honours and brings awareness to the thousands of Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people who have been subject to disproportionate violence in Canada.
You may see red dresses in public spaces around the Niagara Region over the weekend. Red Dresses will be hanging at City Hall in Port Colborne to observe the day. Residents interested can consider joining in the annual walk planned for Sunday beginning at St. Catharines City Hall. The event starts at 2 p.m. and features the Strong Water Singers, a market with Indigenous artisans, and more.
Additional information about Red Dress Day can be found on the Canadian Encyclopedia web page.
