Niagara Region has begun a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (EA) Study to assess alternative routes for the Eastside Sewage Pumping Station (SPS) forcemain. This project will evaluate options for crossing the canal together with other planned infrastructure, specifically a Regional watermain to Barrick Road and the City of Port Colborne’s sanitary forcemain for the future East Side Employment Lands Sewage Pumping Station.
The Eastside Sewage Pumping Station forcemain is the only sewer crossing servicing the east side of the City, and the location of the existing forcemain crossing at the canal near the Port Colborne Water Treatment Plant is not ideal.
The Process
This study is being planned as a Schedule ‘‘B’’ Class EA, satisfying Phases 1 and 2 of the Municipal Engineers Association (MEA) Class EA process, which is a planning process approved under Ontario’s Environmental Assessment Act. This study will define the problem(s) / opportunities associated with the forcemain, develop and evaluate alternative strategies, determine the most feasible solution, and identify methods to avoid or minimize impacts to the community and natural environment
Niagara Region encourages the public and stakeholders to actively participate in this planning process. Information about the project will be available on Niagara Region’s website as part of Public Information Centre (PIC) No. 1. You can learn about how this project will contribute to Niagara’s overall growth plan, key servicing issues being considered, and how you can have your voice heard.
Public Information Centre No. 1 Details
A recorded video and information regarding the Eastside SPS Forcemain Replacement Study will be made available on the project website beginning Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2021. This will be followed with a two-week period to submit PIC No. 1 related comments to the Project Team. Responses will be posted Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2021 on Niagara Region website.
Upon completion of the study, a Project File Report documenting the study process will be prepared and made available for public review and comment. Anyone who wishes to comment on or to be involved in this study should indicate their interest, preferably in writing to:
