For more than 125 years, the Port Colborne grain terminal has connected products from the Great Lakes region with the global market. Now, the City of Port Colborne is seeking community input on the future of the empty structure.
The grain terminal is a unique piece of property located on Lake Erie at the south end of the Welland Canal. The property allows for multi-modal transportation for year-round shipping to North American markets, an active rail spur to the terminal, and an adjacent road for trucks.
Since the end of 2024, the grain terminal has been vacant, and Council has chosen not to go forward with expressions of interest from three companies. Instead, the City is asking the public for input on potential uses for the grain terminal property as part of a process to determine the future of the site.
The public is invited to provide input on several key questions, including whether the site should continue operating as a hub for receiving, storing, and transporting grain; potential alternative uses for the site; which (if any) aspects of the terminal should be preserved; and possible ways to repurpose the facility.
The public will be invited to share their feedback in several ways:
- Online survey: Complete the survey before Friday, March 14
Take the Survey - Paper survey. Visit City Hall, the Vale Health & Wellness Centre, or the Port Colborne Public Library, for a paper copy of the survey, which closes Friday, March 14
- In-person open houses in the Vale Health & Wellness Centre’s Golden Puck Room. Drop in and talk to Councillors and staff on:
- Wednesday, March 5 from 2 to 6 p.m.
- Thursday, March 6 from 3 to 7 p.m.
