Port Colborne will observe Remembrance Day with two ceremonies on Monday, Nov. 11.
One ceremony is at H.H. Knoll Lakeview Park in collaboration with Port Colborne Branch 56 of the Royal Canadian Legion. The ceremony will take place at the City of Port Colborne Cenotaph for the First and Second World Wars, Korea and Afghanistan from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. The proceedings will be livestreamed on the City’s YouTube and Facebook accounts. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will move to Port Colborne Branch 56 of the Royal Canadian Legion at 67 Clarence Street.
The second ceremony is in partnership with St. John’s Lutheran Church and will take place at 10:45 a.m. at the Township of Humberstone Cenotaph for the First and Second World Wars and Korea in Centennial Park, 2767 Vimy Road.
Remembrance Day has been commemorated by Commonwealth member states since the end of the First World War to honour those who have served during times of conflict and those who died in the line of duty.
“We observe Remembrance Day to pay respect to those who fought for freedom and peace and to make a difference in Canada’s future. Wearing a poppy and taking the time to attend a ceremony are the best ways to honour our veterans and to keep their memory alive” said Port Colborne Mayor Bill Steele.
The City of Port Colborne’s public offices will be closed on Nov. 11.
