Port Colborne is going green for Earth Day with the return of the City’s free tree giveaway.

The first-come, first-served event begins at 9 a.m. on Thursday, April 17, supplying 500 free trees and 100 free seed packs to Port Colborne residents. The event takes place in Market Square, located at 59 Charlotte St. There is a limit of two trees per household.

This year, residents can look forward to a variety of tree species (while supplies last), including:

  • Bur oak
  • Red maple
  • Silver maple
  • White birch
  • White spruce

The giveaway is in partnership with the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority and Sassafras Farms. Along with free trees and seed packs, grow-your-own pollinator greenhouse kits will be available to purchase from Sassafras Farms for $25. Pollinators play an important role in maintaining healthy, diverse ecosystems while supporting biodiversity and crop production cycles. City staff will be on site to facilitate an information session regarding tree care and sustainability.

Port Colborne Mayor William Steele praised residents for their continued participation in the tree-planting initiative.

“Port Colborne is a city rooted in the outdoors, and we are always looking to enhance our beautiful green spaces,” says Steele. “Increasing residents’ awareness of our environmentally sustainable practices ensures our community will remain a vibrant place to live, work, and raise a family for generations to come.”

In July 2024, the City of Port Colborne adopted an Urban Forest Management Plan. The strategic environmental initiatives have led to the planting of more than 400 trees across the city, growing the tree canopy along roads and in park networks.
