Victoria Day weekend is when Port Colborne parks, playing fields, and splash pads typically open for the season, but residents and visitors can expect to enjoy some city amenities a few weeks earlier.
Starting Friday, May 6, the parks crew schedule will extend into the weekend servicing washrooms and waste removal on West Street and at frequently visited parks including H.H. Knoll Lakeview Park and Lock 8 Gateway Park. Crews will also begin servicing park pavilion permits, playing fields for youth soccer, girls’ softball, minor baseball, adult slo-pitch leagues, and tennis/pickleball courts.
Beginning Friday, May 13, the city’s lakeview crew will be starting a week early to service parks and playing fields from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. across the city.
Additional public washrooms including Centennial Park, and the discovery spray pad at H.H. Knoll Lakeview Park are also set to open for the season the following week, just in time for Victoria Day weekend, pending final inspections.
“Weather is definitely a factor in when we fully open for the season, which is why we typically aim for the Victoria long weekend. Staff have been preparing facilities in case we have a long stretch of nice weather in early May, which it looks like we have in the forecast,” said Chris Kalimootoo, director of public works.
