Port Colborne

The City of Port Colborne has launched a community engagement survey to help inform and identify key themes for the development of its new strategic plan.

With the first months of a new council term underway, setting a direction for the next four years will be crucial for addressing the challenges and opportunities ahead. It calls for a focus on making sure the response to the knowns and unknowns is approached from a position of strength. The city’s current (2020-2023) strategic plan was adopted in May 2021. It contains 40 priority projects that align with six key pillars and provides a line of sight for staff to work towards in their day-to-day responsibilities.

A report to council at the Jan. 24 meeting by the manager of strategic initiatives, Gary Long, indicated that some continuity between the two plans should be maintained, namely the vision and mission statements, corporate values, and key pillars. “These are foundational pieces that the city’s corporate leadership team believes will still be relevant going into the new term of council,” says Long.

The development of a new strategic plan will kick off with a survey to gather the public’s input. “Our leadership team decided it was best to start the strategic planning process while community feedback is still fresh in the councillors’ minds (from the election),” says Scott Luey, CAO. “We would like to have the survey results in hand as Gary and I go into facilitated discussions with council and senior staff in February-March.”

To align with this timeline, the community engagement survey will be available until February 17 at 5 p.m. on the City’s website. Paper copies of the survey are also available at City Hall and the Port Colborne Public Library. Requests for an accessible format or communication support can be made by calling Customer Service at 905-835-2900. Results from the survey will be reported to Council and used to support implementation of the strategic plan later this spring. Hard copy surveys returned to City Hall or the Public Library after the deadline will be accepted.

“I want to thank the community for participating in this process and preparing Port Colborne for the future,” says Luey. “A collective voice is needed so the city can continue delivering programs and public services in an exceptional way. That’s why I hope, together with all of you, we can make this survey’s engagement rate the highest it’s ever been.”
