Just in time for summer’s arrival, Port Colborne is ready for residents and visitors to enjoy recreation and park amenities across the city. While everyone was encouraged to celebrate June being recreation and parks month, our public works staff were busy making improvements to recreation and park facilities.
Lions Field
Lions Field has undergone major changes over the course of the past few months. In the outfield, new fencing is lining it as well as landscaping to improve drainage, and the infield features the addition of new stone material. Lions Field has also seen upgrades to LED lighting, plus the addition of hydro panels – installed just in time for events such as the Lions Carnival, returning July 21 to 24, along with eight new trees planted.
H.H. Knoll Lakeview Park
H.H. Knoll Lakeview Park has also seen improvements within the last few months, just in time to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the park. When arriving to the park from the Sugarloaf and Elm Street entrance, visitors will be greeted by a new parkette featuring two food trucks, The Rib Crib and Heavenly Dreams Ice Cream, and a new dining area complete with Adirondack chairs and picnic tables. New trees and shade sails provide shady places to enjoy a meal, treat (or both), with family and friends this summer.
The new fully accessible washrooms are also complete and available for use, with the baby changing tables coming soon. A new water fountain, that includes a water bottle refill station, and a doggy drinking fountain is also in its early stages of installment and should be functioning within the next few weeks.
Maintenance, roads, and parks staff collaborated on many aspects of these projects, alongside contractors, to make this vision come to life. Between the washroom rebuild and parkette at H.H. Knoll Lakeview Park and Lions Field, staff would like to extend a thank you to Star Tile, Regional Door, Horton Automatics, Roy’s Painting, Fenceman Landscaping, as well as R & B Electric for contributing to the completion of these improvements.
“Ultimately, this was made possible by city staff who did a lot of the work in-house,” said Chris Kalimootoo, director of public works. “As always, our team put in consistent, extensive, and time-consuming efforts into these projects.”
City Gardens
Over the course of the last month, the city’s garden staff has also been working hard to keep our garden spaces beautiful. Flowers and shrubbery have been added to many green spaces across the city, which can be seen continuing to flourish for weeks to come.
The flower bed at H.H. Knoll is beginning to take shape and will do so as July progresses. The flowers, which have been planted in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Port Colborne Lions Club, will showcase the logo, with the lion’s head taking shape once the plants are trimmed. So long as Mother Nature cooperates, the flowerbed will be completed just in time for Canal Days weekend, July 29 to Aug.1.
