The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation (SLSMC) advises the public about upcoming infrastructure work at Lock 8 in Port Colborne, beginning January 2, 2025. This work is part of the $180 million, three-year investment in the Welland Canal, announced last month. It involves the installation of hands-free mooring (HFM) units at Lock 8, the final lock in the canal to receive this technology.

The SLSMC understands that this work may cause disruptions for some local residents and businesses and thanks the public for its patience and understanding. The SLSMC will make every effort to minimize noise and other impacts wherever possible.

Project Overview

The work will involve loud construction activities. Work is typically scheduled for 20 hours per day, with a 24-hour schedule only if necessary.

  • Mobilization begins December 30, 2024.
  • Concrete/rock drilling operations is anticipated to begin in early January 2025.
  • In conjunction with drilling and concreting activities, excavator-based demolition is targeted from mid-January to mid-February 2025.
  • Additional construction activities unrelated to drilling or demolition will continue through the end of March 2025.

    About HFM Units

HFM units are remote-operated vacuum pads that hold ships in place during lock transits. Their installation at Lock 8 marks the completion of this modernization effort across all Welland Canal locks.
