After three years in office, Regional Council recently took an opportunity to reflect on what they have accomplished for the people of Niagara, and to refocus their efforts on what priorities remain for the future.
For the better part of two years, our community has dealt with the effects of a global pandemic. Yet, despite the challenges of the pandemic, we have persevered and made progress on a significant number of important projects. Some of these accomplishments include:
- Investing $175 million to redevelop the Linhaven and Gilmore Lodge long-term care homes in St. Catharines and Fort Erie
- Creating or retaining nearly 1,000 jobs through target incentive programs
- Increasing green bin usage by 24% through the implantation of every-other-week collection
- Joining UNESCO’S coalition of inclusive municipalities, demonstrating the Region’s commitment to equity and diversity
- Investing $55 million to help the province build the new West Lincoln Memorial Hospital and the new South Niagara Hospital
- Securing more than $20 million to help expand high-speed internet across the Region
- Implementing a new “on demand” transit service, resulting in more than 36,000 completed trips
- Investing more than $19 million into the construction of new, affordable housing units
- Distributing more than 280,000 doses of the life-saving COVID-19 vaccine into resident’s arms
- Protecting over 70,000 hectares of green space through the Region’s new Official Plan
The work that Niagara Region performs every day touches the lives of residents in profound way, from providing clean water, roads and waste collection to public safety, housing, childcare and much more.
To help spread the word of council’s accomplishments, the Region has launch a campaign dubbed “Here for You”. The campaign aims to ensure as many residents as possible are aware of what council has accomplished for them, as well as provide general education about what programs and services are run by Niagara Region.
