After kicking off mass vaccination clinics in Niagara Falls, Niagara Region Public Health is now hosting three days of clinics in at the Niagara Centre YMCA in Welland. There are still a few appointments available on Thursday, March 25 for the Welland clinic. There are also still spots available for upcoming clinics in St. Catharines/Thorold at Brock University.
“After vaccinating almost 4,000 of our residents at Niagara Falls, we expect to vaccinate another 2,500 over three days in Welland. We are heartened that eligible members of our community have registered for the vaccine in large numbers,” said Dr. Mustafa Hirji, acting medical officer of health, Niagara Region Public Health. “Only if we all get vaccinated can we stop this pandemic. I encourage anyone who is over the age of 75, and has not yet registered for their appointment, does so very soon.”
Progress
- So far, 17,706 people have booked appointments at Niagara clinics through the provincial COVID-19 vaccination portal
- To date, Niagara Region Public Health has administered a total 18,182 doses of vaccine
- Combined, Niagara Region Public Health and Niagara Health have administered more than 56,456 of doses of COVID-19 vaccine
Booking an appointment
Niagara residents who will be turning 75 or older in 2021 (born in 1946 or earlier) and wish to make an appointment - or an individual trusted to make an appointment on their behalf – can book an appointment either online at Ontario.ca/bookvaccine or by calling the Provincial Vaccine Information Line number at 1-888-999-6488.
It’s good to keep in mind:
- Residents can book an appointment at any clinic across Niagara, and can bring an essential caregiver with them to their appointment
- Niagara residents age 80 and over, who have not yet booked an appointment, remain eligible
- When choosing an appointment date, it’s important to remember that residents should wait 14 days after receiving any other vaccine before receiving the COVID-19 vaccine
- It’s recommended that residents wait 28 days after getting the COVID-19 vaccine before they get another vaccine
To book an appointment online, individuals will need to have a green photo health (OHIP) card, as both numbers on the front and back of the card are required. Expired cards will be accepted. Individuals who still have a red and white health card, or who require assistance with booking, can call the Provincial Vaccine Information Line number at 1-888-999-6488.
Niagara Region Public Health asks for everyone’s continued patience, as wait times are likely to continue for the provincial registration portal, both online and by phone.
Once an appointment is booked
On the day of their appointment residents will need:
- The booking confirmation number or QR code from the provincial booking portal. Consider printing out this page or saving a screen shot to a mobile device to save having to write down the number.
- Their health card
- To wear a loose fitting short-sleeve shirt
- A mask
Please arrive no more than five minutes prior to their appointment time. If residents arrive early, and by car, Public Health asks that they wait in their car until five minutes prior to their appointment time.
Transit
Niagara transit operators are pleased to be providing free transit fare to residents to and from their COVID-19 vaccination appointments. This process applies for appointments for both the first and second dose. Rides can be to/from one of the 11 vaccination sites operated by Niagara Region, as well as the clinic operated by Niagara Health at Seymour-Hannah, or any site for COVID-19 vaccinations accessible by public transit.
