Flood Alert

Date: December 21st, 2022       Time: 3:30pm

This notice is intended to inform the public and local municipalities of the condition of the Lake Erie Shoreline as it relates to the Niagara Peninsula and the eastern portions of Haldimand County.

Our area is currently under a Special Weather Statement as issued by Environment Canada calling for an intense winter storm to hit Southern Ontario. Beginning early Friday morning, this storm is forecast to bring very strong sustained southwest winds in excess of 70 km/hour with potential gusts well over 100 km/hour. These strong southwest winds will serve to increase water levels and wave action along the Lake Eire shoreline.

The Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry predict that Lake Erie water levels will increase by 2.35m (7.7 feet) above current levels to an elevation of approximately 176.25masl at Port Colborne and Fort Erie. In addition to the storm surge, significant wave heights, in excess of 2.0m (6.6 feet) are also predicted to occur during this time. Water levels are expected to peak Friday morning but will remain elevated into Saturday. Increased erosion and flooding due to storm surge and strong wave action is likely.

Residents living along Lake Erie should pay very close attention to water levels and waves in their area and are urged to take the advice of Emergency Services. Residents are also advised to close storm shutters and flood-proof low lying openings in their homes. Members of the public are urged to stay away from the shoreline of Lake Erie during this event as conditions may be hazardous.

This notice is in effect until 8:00pm, Saturday December 24th, 2022, and will be updated as required.
