tree planting

An upcoming giveaway from the City of Port Colborne will allow residents to register online to pick up one free tree per household.

From Monday, Aug. 19 at 9 a.m. to Monday, Sept. 9 at 4 p.m., Port Colborne residents can sign up online using Eventbrite to receive one of 150 trees that will be given away Saturday, Sept. 14at the Vale Health and Wellness Centre parking lot on 550 Elizabeth Street.

Hosted by the City of Port Colborne’s Public Works Department in co-ordination with the Environmental Advisory Committee, the giveaway aims to further the City’s new Urban Forest Management Plan and to expand the tree canopy in the city. To do this, a variety of native tree species will be available for pickup in one-gallon pots.

The City has also partnered with Forest City Models and Partners Outdoor (FMCP) to host a rain barrel sale.

At a cost of $40 plus tax each, and with a limit of two barrels per household, residents may purchase their 50-gallon rain barrels on the FCMP Outdoors website while supplies last, and pick them up on Saturday, Sept. 14 in the Vale Health and Wellness Centre parking lot.

Proof of residency will be required at the time of pickup. (e.g., driver's licence or utility bill) for both trees and rain barrels.

Additional details about eligibility, the available varieties of trees and specifications of the rain barrels can be found at portcolborne.ca/environment
