Government of Canada is investing $19.25 million in Project – Building Capacity for the City of Port Colborne: Investing in Growth and Development
Port Colborne, ON— Today, Vance Badawey, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transport & Internal Trade and Member of Parliament for Niagara Centre, announced a $19.25 million federal investment to improve water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure in the City of Port Colborne.
This funding supports the Building Capacity for the City of Port Colborne: Investing in Growth and Development project, ensuring the City has the necessary infrastructure to accommodate future housing needs and economic expansion.
Port Colborne is one of Niagara Region’s fastest-growing municipalities, and with significant housing developments on the horizon, the City must increase density and remove capacity barriers to support future residents, including those with low and moderate incomes.
This investment will provide the essential infrastructure to enable three key housing developments:
✓ Sugarloaf Street and Marina Drive
✓ Highway 140 and Highway 3
✓ Lockview Park
Beyond housing, Port Colborne’s economy is expanding. The recent announcement that Asahi Kasei Battery Separator Canada will establish operations in the city highlights how the industrial lands along the Highway 140 corridor—an integral component of the Niagara Ports Trade Corridor—are attracting new investment.
However, this growth requires critical infrastructure upgrades, placing additional financial pressure on the City’s ability to provide essential services.
Without federal support, the cost of these upgrades would result in substantial increases in property taxes and water bills—a significant burden on local residents.
That’s why the Government of Canada worked closely with the City of Port Colborne to secure this federal investment, delivered through the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund (CHIF).
CHIF is designed to:
✓ Accelerate investments in essential infrastructure
✓ Support long-term economic and housing growth
✓ Enable communities to build more homes, faster
✓ Ensure affordability for municipalities and residents
Together, we are building a stronger future!
This investment plays a crucial role in strengthening core public infrastructure, supporting sustainable growth, and ensuring Port Colborne remains well-positioned for the future.
