A week of education and activities will encourage residents of Port Colborne to take action to ensure they are safe in the case of an emergency.
Running from Sunday, May 5 to Friday, May 11, Emergency Preparedness Week is a national awareness initiative that has taken place annually, during the first full week of May, since 1996.
This year’s theme is ‘plan for every season’, which highlights the need to make a plan, build a kit, and stay informed during emergencies throughout the year, including floods, severe weather, power outages and blizzards.
In Port Colborne, residents are invited to visit the Public Library from May 6 to 11, during business hours, to receive information on how they can prepare for emergencies. There will also be a scavenger hunt to find pictures throughout the library of essential items to have in an emergency kit.
It is recommended that an emergency kit should have everything a family would need to be safe and take care of themselves for at least three days immediately following an emergency.
Items include non-perishable food items, bottled water, flashlights, a radio, batteries, medications, blankets and storage containers.
The City’s social media accounts will be sharing information throughout the week to encourage individuals to take action now so that they are better equipped to protect themselves and their families during emergencies.
