The Port Colborne Public Library has doubled down on its commitment to helping young readers.
Thanks to a $1,000 donation from the Port Colborne Lions Club, the library has added to its collection of Wonderbooks, a print book with a ready-to-play audiobook inside.
Having first purchased 18 Wonderbooks in 2023, thanks to a previous donation from the Lions Club, the library’s Chief Executive Officer Rachel Tkachuk said the state-of-the-art children’s reading resources are flying off the shelves.
“The collection was so popular this past year, that we actually did not have an official shelf spot for them, because the books were almost always checked out,” she said. “But the Wonderbooks are more than just popular, they are powerful tools that engage young readers and enhance literacy skills, helping to build a strong foundation for lifelong learning.
This year’s donation has added 18 new Wonderbooks to the collection.
Along with reading and listening to the books, children can also switch to ‘learning mode’ for additional literacy learning activities.
To celebrate, a ceremonial exchange of the new books took place Thursday, Aug. 15 when members of the Lions Club and the Library Board gathered at the library to see the books their donation funded.
Tkachuk said the Lions Club’s annual donation greatly enhances children’s programming and literacy.
“We are deeply grateful for the continued support of the Port Colborne Lions Club, which positively impacts our community year after year,” she said.
Port Colborne Lions Secretary David Borbely said the donation was part of ongoing initiatives to help the people of Port Colborne.
“We like to donate to the Port Colborne Library because we are here to serve the community, and we feel the Library is a good way to serve, both young and old, which gives us good bang for our buck.”
With the new books now in circulation, Tkachuk said the impact they will have on the children who read them is just beginning.
“Every book opens a door to a world of possibilities, empowering children to dream, learn, and grow,” she said. “This Wonderbook collection will nurture not just young minds in our city, but the future of our Port Colborne community.”
