Deputy Mayor’s Report
Deputy Mayor Bodner said it was his honour to serve as Deputy Mayor while Mayor Steele is on an unpaid leave of absence until the end of February. He thanked the community, participating groups and City staff for taking part in the annual SportsFest weekend. He discussed Mayor Steele receiving the 2024 Hazel McCallion Community Leadership Award from the Economic Developers Council of Ontario (EDCO). He highlighted a local participant in the Invictus Games and discussed an award-winning book created by local children about the Touch-A-Truck event. He introduced the Port Colborne Historical and Marine Museum’s 50th anniversary and wrapped up his remarks by wishing everyone a happy Family Day on behalf of Council.
Staff Reports
11.3 a. Council approved merging the existing 2025 and 2026 Watermain design and construction capital project budgets. Council also approved the rehabilitation of the Clarence Street watermain between King Street and West Street.
Correspondence Items
11.4 c. Councillor Beauregard encouraged residents to provide their feedback to the Niagara Transit Facilities, Strategic Asset, and Service Network Master Plan.
Items Requiring Separate Discussion
12.1 Council received an update on the City’s grain terminal and an outline of a proposed public engagement plan to solicit the community input on it’s future.
12.2 Council approved the reallocation of $375,000 from the Pleasant Beach Retaining Wall Remediation project to the West Street Hydro Lines project.
Staff Remarks
- CAO Bryan Boles discussed the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Sustainability Conference that he is attending with Director of Public Works Steve Shypowskyj. During the conference they have met with granting agencies related to energy audits, and they learned about accessibility concerns. He also thanked everyone who took part in the Polar Plunge.
- Director of Public Works Steve Shypowskyj shared that staff have been working with an environmental consultant to review feedback related to waterfront road allowances. A new date for public feedback on the matter will be scheduled in March.
- Director of Development and Government Relations Gary Long discussed how people can still donate to Special Olympics Ontario through the Polar Plunge website. He then discussed surveys on the City’s website that residents can complete related to the future of healthcare in Port Colborne and expanding childcare availability in Port Colborne. He let Council know that staff are also ensuring the City has adequate power supply for the future, and about a meeting with Canadian National Power related to development in Port Colborne.
- Manager of Recreation and Tourism Greg Zwiep thanked everyone for their involvement in SportsFest. He also encouraged the community to support local hockey teams.
- Road and Park Operations Manager Curtis Dray reminded the community to drive according to road conditions and that crews will respond to weather as needed.
Councillors’ Remarks
- Councillor Aquilina discussed accessible ways to complete surveys. She also congratulated Sports Wall of Fame inductees. She thanked staff and volunteers for the SportsFest weekend.
- Councillor Beauregard thanked everyone for their involvement in SportsFest, and he mentioned his own participation in the Mayor’s Cup hockey tournament.
- Councillor Bagu thanked everyone for their participation in SportsFest. He thanked staff for their work on multiple community engagement initiatives and encouraged the community to participate.
- Councillor Bruno thanked everyone for doing a great job at SportsFest. He also asked for additional information about the Sports Wall of Fame nomination process.
- Councillor Elliott reminded everyone that there is no parking on the road during snow events. He asked for a report from By-law about their activity.
- Councillor Hoyle thanked staff for all they did during SportsFest. He also reminded everyone to take part in the healthcare survey and encouraged them to watch local women’s hockey.
- Deputy Mayor Bodner discussed changes at the Sherkston Community Centre.
