Niagara Regional Council approved a revised fee structure on Jan. 21, 2021, which better reflects the true cost of the Region’s waste management services. The following changes to the fee rates at Niagara Region Waste Management sites will take effect April 1, 2021.
Garbage, construction and demolition material
The fee for garbage, construction and demolition materials weighing 51 kg or more will increase to $117 a tonne (from the current $115).
The fee for materials weighing 50 kg or less will be at the $5 minimum. The minimum charge is now applicable on the first 50 kg, rather than the previous amount, which was on the first 60 kg.
The fee for asbestos has increased from $300 per tonne to $385 per tonne.
Staff recommended an increase to Regional Council after reviewing fees compared to other municipalities and private sector options for disposal.
Niagara Region encourages residents to separate all recyclable material to reduce the waste going to the landfill. Residents can also save money if they sort their recyclable materials. They can drop-off recyclable items free at the landfill site and then go across the scales with the items they will be charged for.
