Port Colborne residents are reminded to take necessary steps to keep unwanted visitors like skunks, coyotes, racoons, foxes, and rats away their property this winter.
With colder temperatures finally arriving in Port Colborne, various animals and rodents are on the lookout for food supplies and a place to call home for these chillier months. The City’s Community Safety & Enforcement Division is asking residents to be mindful of this and do their part to keep their property clean.
“With people staying at home due to COVID-19 restrictions, we’re noticing an increase in household waste,” said Tom Cartwright, Director of Public Safety. “This time of year, rodents are constantly looking for food sources. Please keep all food in sealed containers, dispose of garbage regularly, and ensure garbage bin lids are securely fastened.”
Residents can take the following steps to avoid unwanted critters:
- Secure your garbage: garbage bin lids should be securely fastened; they should be able to stay on even if knocked over. Consider giving your garbage bins a rinse occasionally, to remove smells.
- Seal entryways: tiny gaps in your roof, basement, deck, or porch can give rodents access to your home. Make sure any visible holes or cracks are covered.
- Store food properly: make sure food is stored property both inside and outside. It’s always a good idea to take your garbage out frequently and declutter areas.
- Store firewood away from your home: woodpiles can make the perfect home for mice. To avoid bringing an unwanted critter inside, store firewood at least 20 feet away from your home.
- Make sure your property is clean: piles of leaves, brush, tall grass, and branches can also make the perfect home for critters. Be sure to make smaller piles or remove the brush from your property all together.
“With more coyote sightings in residential areas, there is also concern for pet safety,” said Sherry Hanson, Manager of By-law Services. “It’s important to be aware of this when you let your pets outside and when going for walks. The City is aware of these concerns and we’re keeping an eye on it.”
