The City has implemented this Traffic Calming Policy initiative to address traffic related concerns.

 What is Traffic Calming?
Traffic calming is defined as the combination of passive and physical measures that reduce the negative effects of motor vehicle use, alter driver behaviour and improve conditions for non-motorized street users. Traffic calming measures can be effective in addressing issues related to vehicle speed, excessive traffic volume and overall neighbourhood safety. Traffic calming measures combined with engineering, educational and enforcement tools, can significantly improve the liveability and safety of neighbourhoods.

 Niagara Regional Police Service Hotline
To formally report traffic safety concerns, use the Niagara Regional Police Service hotline.

The Niagara Regional Police Service has a hotline that allows citizens to provide feedback on traffic safety issues. The hotline allows the public to provide information on where traffic is dangerous, problems you're encountering on the roads, and other traffic safety concerns.

This initiative doesn't replace existing methods of dealing with accidents and other traffic issues but serves as an additional way of reporting incidents you may have witnessed or become aware of. By the public and police working together, the Niagara Region becomes a safer place for everyone.

To use the NRPS traffic hotline, call 289-248-1060.

Traffic complaints can also be made via email at trafficcomplaints@niagarapolice.ca.

 Traffic Calming Process
  • Initiation: Begins upon written (email) request from residents, city staff, or council members. The requester receives an initial screening update within 30 days. If the initial screening doesn't meet the criteria, the requester is informed.
  • Development: Formulate a traffic calming plan that effectively tackles identified issues after confirming support from respondents. Focuses on analyzing and assessing potential solutions to create safer streets, addressing concerns about speeding and excessive traffic volumes for the benefit of all users.
  • Approval: Requires a minimum response rate of 25% and at least 60% majority in favor. Public Information Centre is conducted and approval by Council.
  • Implementation: Execution of approved traffic calming measures.
  • Evaluation: Post-implementation analysis
