The City of Port Colborne has a variety of parks, trails and green spaces to enjoy all year long from dawn to dusk.  Whether taking a stroll down the friendship trail, having a picnic at H.H. Knoll Lockview Park or watching the ships go through the canal at Lock 8 park, Port Colborne sure has a lot to offer to its residents and visitors.

About the Commemorative Program

 The Commemorative Program allows individuals, families or groups to dedicate benches or trees on or in the City's trails or parks. Individuals, families or groups can choose an already existing bench location and dedicate the bench with a plaque or choose to install a new bench.

The City of Port Colborne is responsible for the installation of memorial benches and trees. Specific selection and placement of are at the sole discretion of the City of Port Colborne, but the general location will be determined in collaboration with the donor.

All donated items become the property of the City of Port Colborne and are subject to removal or relocation. 

There may be an extended lead time in order to acquire benches or in the installation process.

Parks and Recreation Master Plan

The Parks and Recreation Master Plan establishes a strategic framework for parks and recreation services, programs and facilities that will guide future decision making with regards to policy, operations, and capital improvements over the next 10 years. The Master Plan is an actionable document that can readily adapt to change over time in order to address evolving community needs and emerging recreational trends.

Implementation of the plan's various recommendations will include the development of departmental work plans, the use of evidence based assessment tools, ongoing progress reports to Council, capital and operating budget planning and forecasting, and public engagement.

Centennial Park

2767 Vimy Road

Revamped in 1967 by the former Township of Humberstone's Centennial Project, Centennial Park is a 46-acre park overlooking Centennial-Cedar Bay Beach.

It is located on Vimy Road at the southern end of Cedar Bay Road, off Highway # 3

Features include 2 outdoor picnic pavilions, washrooms, tennis courts, volleyballs courts, horseshoe rings and a sand beach.

This is the site of Port Colborne Saddle Club events.

H.H. Knoll – Lakeview Park

160 Sugarloaf Street

Established in 1922, one of our major parks is the beautiful H.H. Knoll Lakeview Park.

Located downtown on Sugarloaf Street at Elm Street, this is one of Port Colborne waterfront parks overlooking Sugarloaf Harbour and Gravelly Bay.

Features include 2 outdoor picnic, pavilions, outdoor stage, rose garden, Melissa's Memorial Playground, Discovery Spray Pad and restrooms.

H.H. Knoll Lakeview Park is at the southern end of the Welland Canals Parkway recreational trail, and site of numerous community events including Canada Day Celebrations, and Canal Days concerts.

In 2020, as part of the Canadian Experiences Fund, in partnership with the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario, the City received financial support to make improvements to H.H. Knoll Lakeview Park with the goal of enhancing tourism initiatives, updating facilities, and creating new experiences for both residents and visitors. Click here to learn more. 

Lock 8 Gateway Park

Lock 8 Gateway Park was established in 1979 to commemorate the visit by then Governor General Ed Schreyer and to mark the 150th anniversary of the opening of the 1st Welland Canal. As a regulating, or guard gate, Lock 8 raises or lowers ships 1 to 4 feet, depending on Lake Erie water levels. At 1,380 feet, it is one of the longest canal locks in the world. The “Jackknife” bridges at either end are raised and lowered as ships pass in, or out of the lock.

Lock 8 Gateway Park is located at main Street West and the Welland Canal.

This beautiful viewing area and park features 1 picnic pavilion, an elevated viewing platform of the canal, flower gardens, fountains, and restrooms.

Materials explaining the operation of the Welland Canal, and information on ship schedules and destinations can be obtained at the Visitor Information Centre located at 76 Main Street West, across Mellanby Avenue from the park.

Looking to play some Tennis or Pickleball?

The City of Port Colborne has tennis and pickleball courts located at the West Side Courts (143 Helen Street) and at Centennial Park (2767 Vimy Road). The courts are available for free to the public to use on a first come first serve basis.

Labour Day - Thanksgiving 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. (weather permitting)

You can book a court for a fee of $6.81 per court/per hour (including tax and applicable User Group Liability Insurance premium) to be guaranteed a court and time (based on availability).

What do I do if I see people smoking in a public park?

Niagara residents and visitors can now enjoy smoke-free outdoor spaces. Outdoor public places on municipal and regional properties are smoke-free under Regional By-law 112-2013.

This includes:

  • Parks
  • Playgrounds
  • Sports or playing fields
  • Splash pads and outdoor pools
  • Arenas
  • Festival and events located on municipal and regional property
  • Properties such as city hall, libraries and recreation centres

Permitted Smoking Locations

Smoking is allowed on sidewalks, parking lots, roads, and rights-of-ways.

Enforcement

Tobacco Control Officers and Municipal Law Enforcement Officers have the authority to issue warnings and charges under the by-law.
The minimum fine is $250 (plus $55 court fees = $305).
