Broken Spoke and Niagara Region Receive Award for Bicycle Refurbishment Program

Posted by Niagara Region on Tuesday, May 28th, 2019

21 Students and program staff from Port Colborne High School were presented with certificates of recognition for their contributions to the Broken Spoke Program in partnership with Niagara Region, which received a Silver Excellence Award 2018 from Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA).

The award, presented by SWANA and Niagara Region at Port Colborne High School recognized the student's hard work, and commitment to divert bicycles from lower-tier recycling options in favour of reuse with support from Niagara Region. With the program, bicycles brought to any one of the Region’s Residential Drop-off Depots are collected, free of charge, and donated to the Broken Spoke program. Students of the program have repaired and donated over 6,000 bikes to local and international charities, organizations and individuals in need.

This unique partnership promotes active lifestyles through access to bicycle transportation, provides students with a skills base to earn school credit for their work, and provides an outlet for those who would like to dispose of their bikes, regardless of the condition.

Niagara Region has been able to provide the program with over 5,000 bicycles since the partnership began in 2016. Residents of Niagara are always encouraged to recycle goods that can be repurposed within their community.

Quotes

"The Niagara Region is enthusiastic about its continued partnership with the Broken Spoke Bicycle Refurbishment Program. Any program that can help divert waste from our local landfills, provide refurbish bicycles for those in need and engage high school students in their community is a program the Region strongly supports."
~ Jim Bradley, Regional Chair

"Providing the opportunity for local students to participate in a program that helps repurpose bicycles is a creative way to encourage recycling in our communities. The joint award presented to the Region, and the Broken Spoke program reaffirms the importance of local waste diversion and repurposing."
~ Catherine Habermebl, Acting Commissioner of Public Works
