Smoke alarm saves life at 91 Bell Street

Posted by Michelle Cuthbert on Sunday, April 7th, 2019

On April 7, 2019 Port Colborne Fire & Emergency services responded to a fire at 2 a.m. at 91 Bell Street. Upon arrival, the fire was coming out of the first and second floor windows.

The only tenant that was in the home was able to escape out the front door, uninjured, because the working smoke alarm notified them in time.

“This morning’s fire is a reminder to all residents that working smoke alarms do save lives,” said Port Colborne’s Fire Chief Tom Cartwright.

Smoke alarms are mandatory under the law and any residence with a fuel fire appliance or attached garage requires a carbon monoxide alarm.

The cause of the fire at 91 Bell Street is unknown at this time.

The estimated damage is $200,000 in addition to $20,000 to 95 Bell Street, next door, from heat melting the siding.
