A Message from the Fire Chief | Fireworks in Port Colborne

Posted by Corporate Communications on Tuesday, May 5th, 2020

To the Port Colborne community,

As we continue to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic across Niagara, I wanted to update you about how your Fire Department is responding with additional changes to our operations.

Fireworks

With the Victoria Day long weekend approaching on May 18, 2020, the Port Colborne Fire Department will not be issuing permits for the sale of fireworks.

This is being done in an effort to reduce risk in the community, including potential fires due to the mishandling of fireworks, and the number of complaint calls we receive from neighbours, ultimately protecting your frontline workers, including EMS, Police, and Fire.

Although fireworks are not available to purchase in Port Colborne during Victoria Day residents may still have access to fireworks. As Fire Chief, I am reminding residents to use EXTREME CAUTION when igniting fireworks.

Did you know?

- 34% of all fireworks injuries occur at home.

o 79% of those injuries occur to children ages 1-14.

o 27% of those injuries occur on Victoria Day.

o 21% of those injuries occur to eyes.

o 62 % of those injuries are burns.

o 12% of injuries are caused by sparklers. Sparklers reach temperatures of over 1000 degrees Fahrenheit.

- You must be 18 years or older to set off fireworks.

We ask that you celebrate upcoming holidays safely without the use of fireworks.

Questions? Call the Fire Department at 905-834-4512.

Sincerely,

Thomas B. Cartwright
Fire Chief
