Port Colborne continues support for businesses to recover from COVID-19 with patio expansion program

Posted by Corporate Communications on Wednesday, June 17th, 2020

With the Ontario government’s recent announcement that the Niagara Region will progress to stage two of its recovery plan on Friday, June 19, 2020, the City has created a temporary patio expansion program to continue its support for businesses that have been permitted to reopen.

The Province’s announcement, with support from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), permits Port Colborne restaurants, bars, and other food/drink establishments (e.g. breweries and coffee shops) to temporarily expand/create outdoor seating areas as they begin to reopen their businesses or expand current service offerings.

In response, City staff have created a temporary patio extension program and permit application to assist Port Colborne businesses in navigating the process, which comes into effect Friday, June 19, 2020, until the end of patio season on October 31, 2020.

“Continuing to work with and support our local businesses is integral to preserving our strong and resilient community,” said Mayor Bill Steele. “Several of our local restaurants and businesses had to close their doors mid-March and with the recent announcement permitting temporary outdoor spaces, Council and staff are implementing programs, like patio expansions, to assist them in safely and gradually increasing their business”.

For more information about the program, including patio design and layout details, guidelines, and restrictions, or to download the application, visit www.portcolborne.ca/page/covid-19.

In addition to temporary patio extensions, the City has also implemented:

- 15-minute curbside pick-up parking for businesses in the Downtown and Main Street areas to ensure their customers have access to parking for take-out or curbside pick-up orders.

- The launch of Resilient Port Colborne, a curated website that allows Port Colborne businesses to share their current service offerings with customers.

- Joined Digital Main Street’s ShopHERE powered by Google program to help Port Colborne businesses start selling online.

“Our staff, along with support from the business community, including our two BIA’s, are doing a great job navigating provincial guidelines and establishing creative solutions to ensure our community not only has a safe re-opening of services but a successful recovery,” said Scott Luey, chief administrative officer.
