Lake Erie Flood Watch for June 10, 2020

Posted by NPCA on Wednesday, June 10th, 2020

For Wednesday, June 10, 2020, this notice is intended to update the public and local municipalities of the condition of the Lake Erie Shoreline as it relates to the Niagara Peninsula and the eastern portions of Haldimand County.

Currently Eastern Lake Erie is under a marine Strong Wind Warning as issued by Environment Canada. The forecast is calling for strong southwesterly winds. Sustained winds over Lake Erie of 40 to 60km/hour with gusts approaching 80km/hour can be expected late tonight and into Thursday morning.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is currently forecasting water levels to increase above current levels on Lake Erie at Port Colborne by approximately 0.5m (1.6ft) to an elevation of 175.55m. Significant wave heights of 1.5m (5ft) are also expected during this event. Water levels will start to build this evening and will peak late Wednesday night and into Thursday morning. With significant wave heights forecasted, damage due to wave uprush and increased shoreline erosion is possible. Flooding of low lying, flood prone areas is also possible during this event.

Stakeholders with interests along Lake Erie should pay close attention to water levels and waves in their area. Residents along the lakeshore are urged to close storm shutters, floodproof low-lying openings in their homes, and stay away from the shoreline.

Information on the Flood Status in the watershed and water levels within local watercourses can be found on the NPCA’s website at:

This notice is in effect until noon, Thursday June 11, 2020, and will be updated as required.
