Port Colborne groups get grants

Posted by Jamie Lee on Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

Niagara This Week

Ten local community groups got a little added boost on Monday.

Each year the Port Colborne Hydro fund doles out $40,000 in two installments to local community groups. The money is generated from dividends received, and represents the city’s granting fund.

Mayor Vance Badawey, and Councillors Bea Kenny and Bill Steele, who sit on the hydro board, presented the groups with the money.

“It’s a small token of our appreciation for what you do,” Badawey told the groups. “It’s the least we can do.”

Recipients include:

- The 79 Lynton Davies Port Colborne Squadron Air Cadets, which will use the money for its youth flying program.

- Community Living Port Colborne/Wainfleet, with the money going to its children’s Saturday fun day.

- The 1812 Sugarloaf settlement, with the money helping to fund this June’s ceremony in commemoration of the bicentennial for the War of 1812.

- Women’s Place of South Niagara, which will use the money for its various programs.

- The YMCA, which will use the money to fund its Wednesday night drop-in program at Steele Street Public School.

- Port Colborne Operatic Society, which will use the money to bring in musicians for this spring’s performance of Annie.

- Royal Canadian Legion, which will use the money to repair the front entrance of its building.

- The South Niagara Health Care Corporation, which will use the money to fund its new health literacy program.

- Port Cares, with the money going to the Reaching Out and Changing Lives campaign.

- The Port Colborne and District Conservation Club, which will use the money for its children’s fishing derbies.

- Port Colborne Festival of Arts, with the money paying for adjudicators at this year’s competitions.
