PORTicipate this April in Dig Safe Month

The City of Port Colborne is encouraging residents to PORTicipate this April in Dig Safe Month. The Ontario Regional Common Ground Alliance (ORCGA) and its members have designated April as Dig Safe Month in Ontario. April is dedicated to raising awareness of safe digging practices across the province to improve safety and reduce damages to underground infrastructure.

The City of Port Colborne is inviting residents to their first annual Dig Safe Flag Raising Ceremony at the Engineering and Operations Centre, 1 Killaly Street West, on Friday, April 5, 2019. Beginning at 8:30 a.m., Mayor Steele will proclaim April as Dig Safe Month and representatives from the ORCGA will attend.

Following the ceremony city staff will be attending seminars on safe excavation practices led by representatives from Enbridge Gas and TSSA.

“Dig safe training and education is provided to our staff on a regular basis to ensure their safety while working near underground facilities”, commented Richard Daniel, manager of operations. “However, the safety of all residents who work, or live, near underground services is everyone’s responsibility. As outdoor construction season begins we are encouraging homeowners and contractors to call for locates before digging to prevent injuries, property damage, or inconvenient outages to key services”.

PORTicipate by “Calling or Clicking Before You Dig”:

  • Support Dig Safe initiatives by calling for locates before beginning any outdoor digging project, large or small.
  • If a neighbour is planning a digging project, remind them to call or click for locates before they break ground.
