Mayor Maloney's Biography

Mayor John Maloney

John received a Bachelor of Arts (History) and a Diploma in Criminology, both from the University of Toronto, and a Bachelor of Law from Osgoode Hall Law School.

John Maloney served fifteen years as a Federal Member of Parliament representing the ridings of Erie, Erie-Lincoln and Welland. He has represented seven of the 12 regional municipalities during this period. John is now the Mayor of the City of Port Colborne and is serving his first term as Regional Councillor.

John practiced law in Port Colborne for 20 years, including a period as City Solicitor, prior to becoming the Member of Parliament.

Before being elected Mayor, John was President of the Port Colborne-Wainfleet Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Board of the Port Colborne Historical and Marine Museum. He also chaired the steering committee to establish the Business Improvement Area in the Port Colborne downtown core and subsequently served as its Chair spearheading streetscape improvements on the delightful West Street. John also chaired steering committees to establish United Way in Port Colborne, Palliative care at the local hospital and served on the steering committee to establish Crime Stoppers of Niagara. He has also served as President of the Welland County Law Association and is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada.

John is currently on the Board of the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority.

John's extensive community involvement led him to be named co-recipient of Port Colborne's First Citizen of the Year. He was also a recipient of the Canada Commemorative 125 medal, the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal.

John is married to Sherrie Maloney and they have five adult children, a daughter-in-law, three sons-in-law and seven grandchildren.
