Port Colborne ready to PORTicipate online in Niagara wide Canada Day celebrations

The City of Port Colborne will be celebrating Canada’s birthday online on Wednesday, July 1, and is encouraging residents to PORTicipate in the fun on the City’s Facebook page. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused the cancellation of the Port Colborne Optimist Club’s annual Canada Day celebrations at H.H. Knoll Lakeview Park and the City’s fireworks display; however, it cannot cancel Port Colborne’s Canadian pride!

Canada Day, the Niagara Way!

On Wednesday, July 1 communities from across the Niagara region are coming together for a Canada Day first - Canada Day, the Niagara Way! Port Colborne, along with its fellow 11 municipalities, the Niagara Parks Commission, and the Niagara Region will celebrate Canada’s birthday online with performances by Tim Hicks, Avenue Inn, Great Lake Swimmers, Spencer Burton, Juliet Dunn & Peter Shea, and Rick McLean.

Online festivities begin at 11 a.m. with a Facebook Watch Party. Residents can tune in on the City of Port Colborne’s Facebook page to catch the action!

Virtual Canada Day Celebrations with the Government of Canada

Residents can also join the Federal Government for virtual Canada Day shows. There will be a daytime show from 1 - 2 p.m. and an evening show from 8 - 10 p.m. Both shows will include artistic performances, messages from heads of state, and more! The Canada Day Celebrations will be concluded with a virtual firework show at 10 p.m. To access each show on July 1, visit www.canada.ca/en/canadian-heritage/campaigns/canada-day.html.

The Federal Government has also created a Canada Day celebration kit, which includes interactive, creative, and educational activities for the whole family. To download the activity pack, visit www.canada.ca/en/canadian-heritage/campaigns/canada-day.html.

Residents can also join the Federal Government on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter, to stay up-to-date on the virtual activities, shows, artistic performances and more.

Run for St. John Ambulance Virtual Canada Day 5k

Residents are also encouraged to PORTicipate by joining St. John Ambulance in its first virtual Canada Day 5k. Register is open at www.runforSJA.ca, then run or walk your own preferred 5km route anytime, anywhere between June 27 and July 1. Running or walking on July 1? Be sure to wear some red and white to show your Canadian pride!

Proceeds from the Run for St. John Ambulance will provide medical supplies and equipment for their community services programs, including Medical First Responders, Search and Rescue Niagara, Therapy Dogs, and Youth Cadets.

All entrants will receive a race bib and medal. Youngsters can participate in the 1k Kids Fun Run for free. Please do not run in groups, unless it is members of your own household and remember to maintain physical distancing from other runners you might encounter.
