Dust control program set to begin on non-paved gravel roads.

Posted by Corporate Communications on Thursday, May 28th, 2020

Beginning Thursday, May 28, 2020, the City of Port Colborne will be applying dust control suppressant on non-paved gravel roads. Weather permitting, this annual program is expected to be completed by Friday, May 29, 2020. The City’s level of service with respect to dust suppressant is to treat all non-paved gravel roadways with liquid stabilizer twice a year. Depending on weather and road conditions, the Operations Division will complete the second application in July or August.

In addition to dust reduction, there are many benefits to applying a liquid stabilizer to a non-paved gravel road:

· Stabilized surface that controls the loss of fines in the gravel

o When fines are lost from a gravel surface, the stone and sand-sized particles that remain will tend to remain loose on the surface, leading to some distresses like wash-boarding and reduced skid resistance.

· Reduced “whip-off” of aggregate

o The stone portion of the gravel will tend to remain embedded in the surface and will not be lost to the edge of the road from traffic.

· Reduced blade and grading maintenance

o A road surface that remains tightly bound and stable will require much less blade maintenance resulting in reduced cost to maintain the roadway.

For any questions or concerns related to this program, please call our Road Supervisor
