Garage and Yard Sales in Port Colborne: A Guide for Residents

As the weather starts to get nicer and we start our spring-cleaning two things usually occur: purging and garage/yard sales.

As the City of Port Colborne remains in a state of emergency, and we are all doing our part to stop the spread of COVID-19 in our community, the City strongly discourages garage and yard sales at this time and asks that residents hold off hosting a garage sale until Emergency Orders currently in place are lifted. Provincial rules do not prevent garage sale; however, Emergency Orders currently in place limit the number of people that can gather to five (5) in one location at any time.

Residents choosing to host a garage sale are asked to take precautions to help stop the spread of COVID-19. Port Colborne, we are all in this together.

If you do have a garage sale here are some things to remember:

- Limit the number of individuals to five (5) at any given time during the sale.

- Ensure the ability to practice physical distancing.

- Limit the physical touching of items for sale.

- Have handwashing or sanitizing available.

- Have items clearly priced, minimizing the need for personal interaction.

- Request exact change whenever possible, or consider electronic payment options like e-transfers.

- Ensure compliance with the City’s Lot Maintenance By-law by keeping your yard clean and tidy.

- For general rules around garage sales check out our Zoning By-law, Section 2.4 (e) that outlines residential properties are permitted to host a garage/yard sale provided that:

         o No person shall conduct more than two garage/yard sales per calendar year at one  location; and

        o No garage/yard sale shall exceed two days in duration.

Considering selling items online as an alternative to a garage/yard sale?

The Niagara Regional Police Services (NRPS) has established an Internet Transaction Zone in the 3 District parking lot and lobby located at 5 Lincoln Street in Welland. They suggest members of the public consider this as an option when arranging a location to conduct a Kijiji / Craigslist style transaction.

The NRPS also has some general transaction safety tips to keep in mind:

· Where possible communicate via email so that a record is kept.

· Insist to meet at a public place.

· Don't go alone.

· Trust your instincts.

· Do not invite strangers into your home, and do not go to theirs.

· Be cautious when buying/selling high value items.

· Perform the transaction during daylight hours.

· If it sounds too good to be true, it normally is.

· Tell a friend or family member about your intentions.

· Take your cell phone with you.

· Do not carry large sums of cash
