April 22 is Earth Day

EARTH DAY | Earth Day is an annual event celebrated around the world on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. This spring our Parks Department has been busy planting trees at Chestnut Park, H.H. Knoll Lakeview Park, and Sunset Park. To date over 40 trees have been planted, ranging from sugar maples, to white pines, and tulip trees, all proven to grow well in the Niagara Region. Some trees are replacing those we lost during the Oct. 31, 2019 windstorm, while others are part of our Parks and Recreation Master Plan. Our park's crew will be continuing planting trees this season at our local parks, and 10 ornamental trees will be planted in pots with flowers along the West Street Promenade that be transplanted to our parks in approximately two years.

Trees contribute to their environment by providing oxygen, improving air quality, conserving water, preserving soil, and provide a home for birds and other wildlife. We look forward to these trees growing with and protecting our community for years to come.

We were unable to celebrate Earth Day this year through large organized neighborhood cleanups and other outdoor activities, but there are still many ways we can take action without leaving our homes! Lowering the thermostat, composting, reducing food waste, planting vegetables, or reusing household items are a few things you can start doing today to celebrate Earth Day At Home. Happy Earth Day, Port Colborne.
