COVID-19 | A Message from Parks & Recreation Division

Posted by Corporate Communications on Thursday, April 16th, 2020

As we continue to follow direction from the Province of Ontario and Niagara Region Public Health regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, the Parks & Recreation Division is committed to keeping our community and partners informed as the situation remains fluid. We are planning and scheduling for multiple scenarios when we can return to offering a variety of programming opportunities to the citizens of Port Colborne to continue a healthy and active lifestyle.

Parks and Recreation Facilities

Our recreation facilities remain closed until further notice, however, staff are ready to react and reopen when it is safe to do so. During the closure period, staff are only creating tentative permits for any future bookings at our facilities, including ice time, field rentals and pavilion rentals. Charges will not be processed at the time of booking. Ice surfaces have currently been removed due to the closure of the Vale Health & Wellness Centre, and to perform required maintenance. When recreation facilities are permitted to reopen, the date when ice is available for use and rentals, as well as the ability to offer Drop-In Programming, may be impacted as a result. Sports fields and parks will continue to be maintained, which includes grass cutting, during the closure period to ensure they are ready for when activities resume.

For more information about arena, community room, or sports field bookings, call 905-835-2900 ext. 535 or email bryantheal@portcolborne.ca.

For more information about park and pavilion bookings, call 905-835-2900 ext.538 or email blairholinaty@portcolborne.ca.

Residents are also reminded that park amenities, including playgrounds and tennis/basketball courts, and City beaches (Cedar Bay/Centennial and Nickel Beach) are closed. To restrict access to some of our outdoor recreational facilities the parking lots at Cedar Bay/Centennial Park, in addition to the Vale Health & Wellness Centre is restricted to limit vehicle traffic. A reminder that municipal parks and trails remain open for passive use, including walks and bike rides.

Recreation Programs

As a result of extended recreation facility closures, all spring recreation programs have been cancelled. Registrants have been contacted and made aware of potential summer program opportunities.

To view additional tentative summer program opportunities, including summer Active Camps, visit our OnlinePORT at http://portcolborne.ca/page/online_port , call 905-835-2900 ext. 538 or email blairholinaty@portcolborne.ca. Charges will not be processed at the time of registration.

Ways you can #PORTicipate

Port Colborne, we’re encouraging you to continue to #StayActive while you #StayHome.
Looking for activities for you and the family outside of your daily walk or bike ride on our trails, through our parks, or in your neighbourhood?

Play our “Beat the Boredom Blues Bingo” or “Alphabet Activity” Checklist Challenge. Be sure to share photos of you and your family PORTicipating on social media using the hashtag #StayActiveNiagara.
