Special Weather Statement Update - Wind and Flood Warning

Posted by Corporate Communications on Monday, April 13th, 2020

UPDATE | Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for Niagara advising of strong wind gusts up to 80km/h until late this afternoon. These winds will significantly increase water levels and waves along the Lake Erie Shoreline. Residents living along Lake Erie should pay very close attention to water levels and waves in their area and are urged stay away from the shoreline of Lake Erie during this event. Crews have closed access to H.H. Knoll Lakeview Park this morning.

As of April 9th, Lake Erie’s water level was sitting at 175.07m which is 86cm (33.9 inches) above average and 7cm (2.8 inches) above the record high set during this time in 1985. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is currently predicting water levels to increase by 1.0m (3.2 feet) above current levels to an elevation of approximately 176.1m. Significant wave heights of 2.0m (6.4 feet) are also forecast to occur all along the Lake Erie shoreline from Haldimand County to Fort Erie. Water levels will start to build late ‪Monday morning‬ with peak water levels occurring ‪Monday evening‬. Residents are also advised to close storm shutters and take other flood proofing precautions as necessary. Increased erosion due to strong waves is likely. High winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break.

CNP is monitoring the weather event expected today and is prepared to respond accordingly.
