Lake Erie Flood Warning November 27, 2019

Posted by NPCA on Wednesday, November 27th, 2019

This notice is to upgrade the Lake Erie Flood Watch issued yesterday to a Flood Warning.

Currently the Niagara Peninsula is under an Environment Canada Wind Warning. The Lake Erie shoreline is predicted to experience strong southwesterly winds starting this afternoon and persisting into the evening. Sustained winds over Lake Erie of 50 to 60km/hour with gusts in excess of 100km/hour are likely.

The current forecast indicates that water levels could rise by 1.6m (5.25ft) above current levels (up to an elevation of 176.20m) with significant wave heights in excess of 2.0m (6.5ft). Flooding of low-lying areas is expected due to storm surge and the significant wave uprush. Damage to shoreline protection works and erosion is also likely during this event. Water levels should start to recede through the early morning hours of Thursday, November 28.

This event has the potential to be similar in magnitude to the storm that occurred recently on Halloween night.

Residents living along Lake Erie should take appropriate precautions such as closing storm shutters and flood-proofing low openings in their homes. Stay away from the shoreline of Lake Erie during this event as wave bourn projectiles (like cobblestones and debris) are expected.

Information on the Flood Status in the watershed and water levels within local watercourses can be found on the NPCA’s website at:

This notice is in effect until noon, Thursday November 28th, 2019 and will be updated as required.
