Port Colborne remembers

Marking the 101st Anniversary of Remembrance Day two ceremonies have been scheduled in Port Colborne on Monday, Nov. 11, 2019:

  • Join the City and Port Colborne Branch 56 of the Royal Canadian Legion at 10:45 a.m. at their branch, 67 Clarence Street. The Legion is also extending an open invitation afterwards for a light lunch at 12 p.m.

  • Join the City and St. John's Lutheran Church at the Township of Humberstone Cenotaph for WWI, WWII and Korea in Cedar Bay Centennial Park on Monday, Nov.11, 2019 at 11 a.m. for a Remembrance Day Ceremony. An open initiation is also extended afterwards for refreshments at the Sherkston Community Centre, 4893 Sherkston Road.

On behalf of Members of City Council and all the Citizens of the City of Port Colborne, may I extend our thoughts and prayers to those who served and continue to serve our country in times of war and peacekeeping. Together, we remember.” – Mayor Bill Steele

On Nov. 9 at 10 a.m. L.R. Wilson Archives staff will be conducting a cemetery tour at Oakwood Cemetery as part of the Remembrance Day commemorations. Through sharing the stories of some of those from the community, the “We Will Remember” Cemetery Tour honours all those who served in Canada’s military. The tour will begin at the western cemetery entrance, near the Hopkins’ Mausoleum. For more information, call 905-834-7604 or email archives@portcolborne.ca.

Residents are also encouraged to support the Poppy Campaign. Every year, from the last Friday of Oct. to Nov. 11, tens of millions of Canadians wear a Poppy as a visual pledge to honour Canada’s Veterans and remember those who sacrificed for the freedoms we enjoy today. Donations collected during the Poppy Campaign are held in trust at the branch level to directly support Veterans and their families within their community and to help ensure Canadians ‘never forget’.

A reminder that municipal administrative offices will be closed Monday, Nov. 11 to observe Remembrance Day. Administrative offices will re-open Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 8:30 a.m. For any after-hours emergencies, please call 905-835-5079.
