Fire prevention week is encouraging you to be the hero in your home

Posted by Michelle Idzenga on Tuesday, October 1st, 2019

Port Colborne Fire & Emergency Services is reminding residents that not all heroes wear a cape! You can be the hero in your home by installing and maintaining working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and planning your escape.

The theme for Fire Prevention Week, October 6-12, 2019, as set out by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), is to plan and practice your escape by following these three steps:

1. Practice a home escape plan so everyone in your home knows exactly what to do if the alarms sound in an emergency

2. Install smoke alarms on every story of your home an outside all sleeping areas

3. Test smoke alarms every month

“In addition to working diligently to ensure every home in Port Colborne has working alarms, we also want to ensure everyone knows the safest routes out of their home should the alarm activate,” said Charles Turpin, fire prevention officer. “We can all be heroes in our homes by maintaining alarms and practicing escape routes on a monthly basis, because as we continuously remind residents, never think it can’t happen to you.”

Port Colborne Fire & Emergency Services are kicking off Fire Prevention Week on Saturday, October 5, 2019 with their annual open house from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Port Colborne Fire Hall, 3 Killaly Street West. Join them for a burn cell demonstration, target practice with fire hose, escape planning, donation BBQ to Niagara Nutrition Partners, prizes and more.

For the month of October fire fighters are also scheduling appointments, on request, to visit homes to ensure they are compliant with smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. They have 150 alarms to give away to residents and their goal is to have none left by the end of the month, moving the city closer to the department’s goal of one hundred percent compliance. To be your own hero, schedule an appointment by calling 905-834-4512.
