Lake Erie Shoreline and Watershed Conditions Statement - Flood Outlook & Wind Warning

Posted by NPCA on Thursday, February 7th, 2019

For Thursday, February 7th, 2019, this notice is intended to update the public and local municipalities of the condition of watercourses within the NPCA’s jurisdiction and the Lake Erie Shoreline as it relates to the Niagara Peninsula and the eastern portion of Haldimand.

Water levels in local watercourses are elevated but remain below critical thresholds. The forecast is calling for another 10 to 15mm of rain throughout the day today with temperatures reaching 10oC. Runoff from the forecasted rain and melting ice will increase water levels, however water levels are not anticipated to reach critical thresholds but flooding of typical flood prone areas is expected or occurring.

Environment Canada has issued a Wind Warning calling for strong southwesterly winds for Haldimand County and the Niagara Region. Winds will build throughout the day and will peak through the overnight and into Friday. Strong southwest winds gusting to 90km/hr can be expected along the Lake Erie Shoreline. The direction and speed of the wind will cause water levels to rapidly increase in the Eastern Lake Erie Basin although they are to remain below critical levels in our area. With an approximate 80% ice cover on Lake Erie, there is also an increased risk of ice shove and piling along the Lake Erie Shoreline. Residents living along Lake Erie are advised to monitor local conditions

The NPCA will continue to monitor these conditions and will issue further messages as required. Information on the Flood Status in the watershed and water levels within the Great Lakes and streams can be found on the NPCA’s website at:

This notice is in effect until 4:00pm, February 8th, 2019 and will be updated as required.
