Winter Control Activities - January 28, 2019

Closures: Port Colborne Public Library closed at 5:30 p.m. due to inclement weather.

Between 4 -8 p.m. there will be three trucks plowing priority roads. Residents are reminded not to park vehicles on roadways. If your vehicle is parked illegally you will be issued a $75 ticket along with a purple tow notice.

In preparation for tonight's weather and snow removal activities, residents are reminded not to park vehicles on roadways. If your vehicle is parked illegally you will be issued a $75 ticket along with a purple tow notice.

Residents are also reminded that during winter weather conditions, pushing or blowing snow and ice onto or across public roadways creates an unsafe situation for drivers.

If you notice poor or dangerous street conditions, please forward this to our staff at the City Works Yard at (905) 835-5079 and your concerns will be dealt with as soon as possible.

Your Cooperation is greatly appreciated.

The Niagara Region has also advised that an Extreme Cold Weather Alert will go into effect for Niagara today (Jan. 29) at 5 p.m., as temperatures are expected to drop below -15 C.

They are reminding the public to check in on neighbours who may be at risk during extreme cold weather, and stay warm and healthy with these tips:

• Cover exposed skin (exposed skin can become frostbitten in 30 seconds) • Wear a hat (up to 40 per cent of body heat loss can occur through the head) • Canadian Paediatric Society recommends keeping children indoors if the temperature falls below –25 Celsius, or if the wind chill is –28 Celsius or greater • Use caution when shovelling snow especially for those that have heart, respiratory (breathing) problems or other medical conditions. Snow shovelling strenuous and can cause an onset of heart or respiratory problems. • Always be alert for signs of frostbite and hypothermia
