Lake Erie Watershed Conditions Statement Flood Outlook for Nov. 9th, 2018

Posted by Michelle Cuthbert c/o NPCA on Friday, November 9th, 2018

Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement calling for strong westerly to southwesterly winds for Haldimand and Niagara. Winds will build throughout the night and will peak Saturday midday. Winds will be 50km/hr gusting to 90km/hr and will begin to diminish and shift direction early Saturday evening. The direction and speed of the wind will increase water levels in the Eastern Lake Erie Basin.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) are forecasting Lake Erie water levels at Port Colborne to increase due to surge by 0.7m over current water levels with significant wave heights up to 1.5m. Peak water levels are forecasted to occur midday Saturday. During this time, there is an increased risk of shoreline erosion and flooding resulting from strong wave action and surge. Residents living along Lake Erie are urged to monitor the situation closely.

Please note that Lake Erie static (calm and flat) water levels are well above the long-term historical average and are forecasted to remain elevated through spring 2019. The potential for shoreline flooding and erosion is greater at this time due to the higher than normal Lake Erie water levels. Any moderate increase in West or Southwest winds will further increase this risk.

The NPCA will continue to monitor these conditions and will issue further messages as required. Information on the Flood Status in the watershed and water levels within the Great Lakes and streams can be found on the NPCA’s website at:

This notice is in effect until Sunday November 11th, 2018 and will be updated as required.
