Japanese hornets nesting in Port Colborne baseball diamond

Japanese hornets, a new insect bee keepers are battling, are nesting in the baseball diamonds at the Rotary Club Baseball Diamonds on West Side Road in Port Colborne. All three baseball diamonds are closed until further notice as the hornets are nesting in the infield’s clay. City staff have contracted a bee/hornet expert who is working on removing the hornets. They will be spraying again the afternoon of August 1 and tomorrow, August 2.

Six Japanese hornets are capable of killing 10,000 honeybees. They are also capable of stinging multiple times, unlike honeybees who only sting once. They typically nest in the ground; however, a colony has been terminated in Niagara from an eaves trough. Residents and visitors are encouraged to stay away from diamond three at the Rotary Club Baseball Diamonds, and, if notice additional clay mounds on the other fields, or at other city facilities, to call the Operations Centre at 905-835-5079.
