Fishy fun for kids in Port this weekend

Posted by Jamie Lee on Friday, June 15th, 2012

Niagara This Week

Kids have the chance to have some reel fun this weekend.

The annual kids fishing derby is set to take place this Sunday at HH Knoll Park in Port Colborne. Put on by the Port Colborne and District Conservation Club, the yearly event gives children 13 and younger an opportunity to try their hands at fishing along the shores of Lake Erie.

It’s a catch and release derby with tons of prizes, including awards for biggest fish caught and smallest fish caught, for the young anglers. There will also be loot bags for the first 200 kids.

Registration, which is free, for the event gets underway at 8 a.m. and kids can begin fishing as soon as they register. Fishing goes until 11 a.m., at which point participants will receive a free lunch and the awards will be handed out.

Worms will be provided for the kids, but they’re asked to bring their own buckets. Fishing takes place in the lagoon area and registration is at the pavilion. The event will take place rain or shine.
