Mayor Vance Badawey wants south Niagara to have its own health-care system.

In a media release issued late Tuesday afternoon, the Port Colborne mayor said he is calling on Niagara Health System supervisor Dr. Kevin Smith to bring local decision-making back to the delivery of hospital services in south Niagara.

He said the City of Port Colborne established South Niagara Health Care Corp. in 2008 to give local stakeholders a forum where they could discuss the preservation and advancement of local health-care services.

That organization is now inviting representatives from Welland and Wainfleet municipal councils to sit on its board of directors, he added.

A full story will be developed for Thursday's Tribune.
