Southern tier municipalities to host new year’s levees

It’s an annual way to ring in the new year.

This weekend Port Colborne and Wainfleet will host their annual mayor’s levees to help ring in the new year. On Saturday, Wainfleet Mayor April Jeffs will host the Wainfleet levee with a new twist and on Sunday Port Colborne Mayor Vance Badawey will host his levee.

In addition to the levee, where residents will get a chance to meet and greet Jeffs and the township council, the Wainfleet levee will coincide with the township’s first annual Christmas tree burning.

“We talked last year about doing it at some point,” said Mayor April Jeffs, noting it’ll be a fun addition and provide a way for residents to get rid of their trees as the Region’s tree service doesn’t extend to Wainfleet.

The Wainfleet levee kicks off at 1 p.m. at the baseball diamonds behind the arena. Trees may be dropped off in advance for those unable to attend the event. Hot chocolate and doughnuts will be provided and the event is for Wainfleet residents only. If weather is inclement the levee will move indoors and the burning will take place later.

In Port Colborne things will get underway on Sunday at city hall. Port’s levee will run from 1-4 p.m. in the council chambers, which are located on the third floor of city hall.
