This Heritage Week, Feb. 18-24, 2019, Port Colborne Historical & Marine Museum and the L.R. Wilson Heritage Research Archives invites you to PORTicipate as they explore the theme “Heritage: The Ties that Bond”. Join them on social media by sharing an artifact or archival piece (letter, recipe, photo, etc.) that is unique to your story.

How you can PORTicipate: When sharing your artifact on social media use hashtags #PCHeritage and #PORTicipate with the Port Colborne Historical and Marine Museum on Twitter (@PortMuseum) or Instagram (@portcolbornemuseum) OR find the L.R. Wilson Research Archives on Facebook (@WilsonArchives).

“This is a great way for our community to discover firsthand the unexpected ways that our family heritage connects with the heritage of our community,” said Stephanie Powell Baswick, curator, Port Colborne Historical & Marine Museum.

Individuals looking to explore Heritage Week further are invited to the L.R. Wilson Heritage Research Archives, 286 King Street, on Friday, Feb. 22, 2019 between 1 – 4 p.m. as volunteers and staff will be showcasing the process involved in preserving community heritage. For those looking to discover history hands-on visitors can try a rope tying display and demonstrations.  Interested in becoming a Museum member? Volunteers will also be selling memberships at the open house and benefits include the Museum Musings newsletter, invitations to exhibit previews, 10% off at the gift shop and free admission to Canal Days! Light refreshments will be served at this free event.

About Heritage Week
Each February, the Heritage Trust invites Ontarians to participate in Heritage Week in Ontario – to celebrate heritage in all its forms (cultural and natural, architectural, archaeological and collections), its diverse traditions and cultural expressions. Heritage Week provides a wonderful opportunity for individuals and communities to reflect on their contributions to Ontario, how heritage is conserved, promoted and commemorated, and how they might shape the future. Since 1974, the third Monday every February has been identified as Heritage Day in Canada. In 1985, the Ontario government designated the third week in February as Ontario Heritage Week, with the federal Heritage Day kicking off the week. Many heritage organizations and municipalities have used Heritage Day and Ontario Heritage Week as vehicles to simulate awareness of heritage resources and heritage-related issues within their communities, and to honour the organizations and volunteers who have worked to protect Ontario’s irreplaceable heritage resources.

About L.R. Wilson Research Archives

This research facility, on the grounds of the Port Colborne Historical and Marine Museum, located at 286 King Street, Port Colborne, was completed in 2006, and designed externally to recapture the spirit of Port Colborne's first Town Hall which was built in 1873 and torn down a half century later. The research room is open May to Dec., Monday - Friday 1 - 5p.m. and Saturday by appointment; Jan. to April open by appointment.
